Google Business SEO is the work of optimizing your Google Business Profile — categories, services, hours, photos, and reviews — so your business appears in the local map pack, in Google Maps, and in the brand panel. It is a separate discipline from website SEO. The profile is its own ranking entity with its own inputs, and Google sorts local results on relevance, distance, and prominence. You control relevance and prominence. Distance you simply accept.
What does a Google Business Profile actually influence?
The profile decides whether you show up in the map pack, in Maps, and in the knowledge panel when someone searches your brand. It does not rank your web pages, and no amount of profile work will.
Relevance comes from categories, services, and description matching the query. Distance is the searcher's location against your address or service area — not optimizable, only acceptable. Prominence is everything else: reviews, citations, links, and how established your business looks across the open web. Most of the upside sits in relevance and prominence, and most businesses have never worked either.
Which fields matter most on the profile?
Primary category is the highest-leverage field on the whole profile. It sets which queries you are eligible for at all, and every other field only adjusts your position inside that eligible set.
| Field | What it drives | How often to revisit |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | Whether you qualify for a query at all | Once, unless services change |
| Secondary categories | Coverage of adjacent searches | Quarterly |
| Services and descriptions | Long-tail and "near me" matching | Quarterly |
| Hours and holiday hours | "Open now" filtering, plus conversion | Monthly |
| Photos | Engagement signals and buyer confidence | Monthly |
| Business name | Compliance risk, not ranking upside | Never edit to add keywords |
Pick the narrowest primary category that still describes the service you sell. "Emergency plumber" and "plumber" are not the same eligibility set. Write services in the language customers use, not internal jargon. Track movement with local SEO tools that sample the map pack from multiple coordinates; local rank shifts block to block, and one desktop check tells you little.
Why does review velocity matter more than review count?
A steady flow of recent reviews signals a business that is operating. A pile of reviews that stopped two years ago signals the opposite, and local rankings commonly reflect that.
Build the request into the job itself: at handoff, on the invoice, in the follow-up text. Never gate requests so only happy customers are asked; that breaks Google's policy. Respond to every review, including the bad ones. Responses add text to the profile, keep the listing visibly active, and show prospects how you behave when something goes wrong. A short factual reply to a one-star review persuades more readers than a defensive essay.
How do the profile and the website corroborate each other?
The profile and the site are two claims about the same business, and Google trusts both more when they agree. Matching details are not busywork; they are the corroboration.
Same name, address, and phone everywhere they appear — site footer, directories, aggregators, and ongoing citation consistency cleanup. Every service on the profile should have a page on the site that proves you perform it, marked up with schema.org LocalBusiness or Service data matching the profile fields word for word. The site half is measurable too. When we ran ImpressionMine against its own site, it returned an AI-visibility score of 58/100 and found exactly one backlink from one referring domain. Fixing what it flagged moved the score to 67.
Which mistakes should you fix first?
In order of damage: keyword-stuffed business names, a wrong primary category, then inconsistent details. Work them in that sequence before touching anything else.
- Strip keywords out of the business name. "Dallas Roofing Repair And Storm Damage Experts" when the truck says "Bonham Roofing" is a suspension risk and an easy competitor report.
- Correct the primary category. A wrong one quietly removes you from the queries that pay, and nothing downstream compensates.
- Reconcile name, address, phone, and hours across the profile, the site, and every directory that lists you.
- Fill what is empty: holiday hours, current photos, services, and a Q&A seeded with questions customers genuinely ask.
Can a profile substitute for a website that ranks?
No. The profile wins map-pack queries; the site wins everything else, and each strengthens the other.
Our September 2026 national probe put "google business seo" at 720 monthly searches, difficulty 47, and a $42.62 cost-per-click, with weak pages holding page one — the pattern a competitor analysis should surface before you spend anything. Weak incumbents fall fast. Scissortail Fractional, a brand-new domain, reached the top ten for 11 of 11 target keywords within eight days of launch, six at position one, with zero ad spend. The profile did not produce that; a well-built site did. If you want both handled, our engagement options cover the one-time strategic report and the three-month done-for-you build.
